Q: What happens if I don't dilute the acid for a acid feed system.
A:

Hi, Basic safety precautions should always be followed. Muriatic Acid (liquid and mist) can cause server burns, may be fatal if swallowed or inhaled. Inhalation can cause sever lung damage. Attached to this email is a PDF of the manual for the AQL-CHEM4-ACID for reference purposes. Please read all warnings and cautions for this product. DANGER Chemical Hazard: Adding water to acid may result in explosion, and/or excessive heating which may cause death, serious injury or major property damage. To avoid ALWAYS ADD ACID TO WATER NOT WATER TO ACID. OPERATION: The Muriatic acid is stored in the 15 gallon storage tank below the pump. DO NOT OVER FILL as the tank only holds 15 gallons. The Muriatic acid is pumped from the tank utilizing a 3/8” pick up tube to the pump, through the small tube, and then to the Return to Pool Line. This system is designed for: • Muriatic Acid (HCl) Hayward recommends dilution rates of: • 1 gallon of Muriatic acid to 3 gallons of water with Pools • 1 gallon of Muriatic acid to 5 gallons of water with Spas The acid feed tank provides a cap to access the tank. Image_2023-08-28_09-40-46.png IF YOU CHOOSE AN ACID FEEDER FOR pH CONTROL, additional safety precautions are required to ensure that an equipment malfunction is detected. Great care must be taken when installing, maintaining and operating acid pump feed systems. Acid is dangerous to handle, and will harm people and equipment if not properly contained, transported, poured, stored, and dispensed. PRECAUCIÓN: Equipment failure can potentially cause too much acid to be dispensed into the water, causing an equipment and health hazard which would not be detectable without the use of independent pH measurement. • Always use a 4:1 dilution in the acid feed system. • To prevent violent boiling and splashing, ALWAYS ADD ACID TO WATER, never add water to acid to dilute it. Some use the rhyme “Remember, do as you oughta- add acid to water”. • Strictly follow the acid vendor’s safety and handling protocols including hand, body and eye protection when transferring or handling acid. • Choose a 5 gallon per day acid feed pump to keep flow rate low. • Limit the available acid reservoir to 1 gallon per 15,000 gallons of water. This limits the available acid in the event that equipment malfunctions and empties the tank into the pool or spa. • Only a properly installed and maintained system will control the pH and sanitizer levels of the water. • If acid is not diluted properly or the feed pump is oversized, it will overshoot the pH correction. • Periodically use an independent pH and chlorine test kit to verify that pH is at a safe level, and that chlorine is at a safe level. If the probes are broken, depleted, dirty, fouled with oils, lotions, or other contaminants, they can report inaccurate result to the system causing incorrect water chemistry, which at worst, could harm people or equipment. • Check the AquaRite Pro or ProLogic’s display each day before entering the water. If there is any Check System alarm, following the troubleshooting guide in this manual to understand and rectify the condition. If the display is blank, or reporting a communications error, troubleshoot the equipment and rectify the failure before entering the water. • Follow the installation checklist to verify proper operation upon installation and at the beginning of each pool season. Concentrated solutions can be very corrosive and a concentrated batch will released dangerous hydrogen chloride vapor. Wear safety glasses and gloves. Find an area with good ventilation before dealing with the acid. Cover your arms and legs with a lab coat or any protective long-sleeved clothes if dealing with concentrated solution. 2. Prepare a base mix to negate acidity. Mix a 1 lb. box of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) with lots of water. Leave some of the sodium visible at the bottom. Slowly add in the acid. Wait for the reaction, most likely fizzing, to stop. Add in more sodium carbonate if the acid still fizzles. 3. Pour the acid. Tiny amounts of diluted hydrochloric/muriatic acid can be flushed down the sink with large quantities of water. Local law may forbid even this. According to some local environmental protection agencies, you cannot dispose of it down the drain or in the trash unless it's neutralized. Contact your local officials to verify what is allowable in your state. 4. Transport acid to a waste management plant. The facilities often use hydrochloric acid. Phone your local waste management center to see if they can carry it.
